Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
