Area Law Enforcement
Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then located numerous other smeared cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state early analysis indicate the fluid was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to solve the case" and have requested to the community for tips.
A senior political figure said the incident made him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
